Mechanical properties of aluminum alloy 2017

The low carbon content of the aluminum alloy 2017 product greatly reduces the risk of carbide precipitation at the grain boundary during the heat treatment process. Therefore, the alloy has a high resistance to carbide-related intergranular corrosion. The aluminum alloy 2017 product combines tensile strength and impact strength with a low coefficient of thermal expansion and high thermal conductivity. These features are suitable for a wide range of structural and mechanical components.In addition, applications not recommended for aluminum alloy 2017 products require long-exposure temperatures in excess of 570 °F because of the increased risk of toughness reduction. Aluminum alloy 2017 has higher yield strength and lower ductility than austenitic steel, so manufacturing may find that higher forming forces, increased bending radius, and increased allowance rebound are necessary. Deep drawing, stretch forming, and the like are more difficult to perform on aluminum alloy 2017 than on austenitic stainless steel. Solution annealing should be at a minimum of 1925 °F. After annealing, it must be followed by a rapid air or water quenching. In order to obtain maximum corrosion resistance, the heat treated product should be pickled and rinsed.
