The 6063 aluminum is an alloy that is particularly used for commercial applications. Some of the characteristics that make it a popular choice are its strength, cost effectiveness, resistance to corrosion, excellent weldability, great formability and extrudability. Its finishing characteristics are also desirable for the applications that it is used for. The 6063 aluminum alloy can also be easily anodized for color matching with alloys like 5052 and 3003, along with improving its corrosion resistance. The aluminum alloy is typically used for architectural purposes - it has sharp corners on the inside and outside.
The tensile strength of 6063 aluminum is 27,000 psi, yield strength is 21,000 psi and shear strength is 17,000 psi. The 6063 aluminum alloy is mainly used in applications for molding and trim within architectures, door construction, windows, furniture and similar items. The machinability rating of 6063 aluminum that is in T4 and T6 condition is 80 percent compared to 2011 at 100 percent. Welding can be easily performed on this grade of alloy, using common techniques for welding.
When using the annealing process for this aluminum, it is recommended that 775 degrees F be used. The metal should be continuously serviced at this temperature for between two and three hours, then the temperature should be lowered by 50 degrees F every hour until 500 degrees F is reached. Solution heat treatment can be performed at 970 degrees F and aging precipitation heat treatment can be performed at 350 degrees F. With aging precipitation, the metal should be placed in 350 degrees F for eight hours.
